Natural Light Portraits - Why? It's beautiful and economical

natural light is soft and open and can be manipulated.

- V Flats - foam core boards in black and white, they can double as a back drop
- Scrim: translucent white fabric
- Reflectors

Things to Know

- Large light vs Small light: Large light is soft and flattering small light sources are harder and more severe.
-  you have to move your model around to find the light

Indoor - Using Windows

Soft, even light using a window
​hang curtains as a scrim if you can't buy a scrim for diffusion. Scrim is just translucent white fabric
 Back light with a scrim for diffusion and reflectors for fill light
Back light is ethereal and emotional. Back Light has a tendency to scare people but once you know how to deal with it you won't be scared and you'll love it and use it all the time.

silhouette - exposing for the background and underexposing the subject
blowing out the background - exposing for the subject and over exposing the background

Broad light using a window and V flats to dodge light

 Light using black V flats to block light - you can make a little room with the V Flats to block and control the light also keeping a scrim over the window to diffuse and soften the light.

Outdoor

Using open shade - this is the easiest way to shoot outdoors because the shade acts as a diffuser

 Direct light - if you are going to shoot in direct day light do it later in the afternoon so the coming from the side and not above.

Dappled light - sometimes its unavoidable so use a prime lens to soften it.

Anne Marie D'Arcy is a talented photographer based in Houston, Texas. She pursued her education at the University of Houston and was given the opportunity to apprentice under Jim Olive at Stockyard Photography. Anne Marie later joined Francesca's Collections as a staff photographer, where she was responsible for shooting product images and marketing campaigns for the fashion retailer for four years. In 2011, Anne Marie launched her own photography business, focusing on Portrait and Event photography. Her business has experienced significant growth, and she now collaborates with high-profile corporate clients, including BMW, Lincoln, The Texans, Telemundo, Goode Company, Harvard University, and many others. In 2013, Anne Marie was honored with the Carol Crow Fellowship for her portrait series "American Sikh." She is currently a faculty member at the Houston Center for Photography, where she teaches the fundamentals of photography and composition. Beyond her commercial work, Anne Marie is also dedicated to creating fine art collections and frequently collaborates with Houston architects to capture their architectural projects. She has recently become a licensed drone pilot and is eager to work with real estate clients, offering aerial photography and video services.
